What is Niche.com?

Founded in 2002, Niche.com was created to help students and families make informed college decisions through a centralized platform of rankings and data. Now recently, as of November 5th 2025, Niche released a new college cost comparison tool which we are going to review in this blog. (You can find the cost comparison tool here.)

For families deep in the college search, Niche's goal is simple: find a school that fits your student academically and socially, and makes financial sense.

That last part has never been harder. The cost of tuition has increased more than 168% in the past 20 years, while the average starting salary for college graduates has only grown 19% in the same time. It’s no wonder that affordability has become one of the biggest deciding factors for parents today.

Niche’s new tool aims to simplify that process by calculating the true cost of college—showing side-by-side comparisons of what you can actually expect to pay at each school, all in one place.

Currently, families have to visit every university’s website and manually enter their information into each school’s “Net Price Calculator.” That process is not only tedious and time-consuming but often unreliable. In fact, hundreds of parents we’ve spoken with recently have said their biggest frustration during the college search is the lack of transparency around cost and student life.

The Breakdown:
To keep things simple, we tested Niche’s new True Cost tool in three steps:

Step 1: Choose 10 colleges to compare.

• We started with a list of 10 schools—the average number on most students’ college lists.

Step 2: Use each school’s Net Price Calculator.

• For each of the 10 schools, we went directly to the university’s website, found their official Net Price Calculator, and entered the exact same information for each. This gave us a clear baseline for comparison.

Step 3: Use Niche’s new “True Cost” tool and compare results.

• Finally, we entered that same information into Niche’s new tool to see how its estimates stacked up against the universities’ own calculators.

The Results:

In short: Niche’s True Cost tool is faster, easier, and far more user-friendly than most university websites.

All we had to do was enter the colleges we wanted to compare and provide basic information—things like GPA, household income, how much we could contribute each year, and so on. Within about two minutes, Niche generated a detailed side-by-side cost breakdown for all 10 schools.

Here’s what the report included:

• A 4-year summary of total costs and estimated financial aid

• Financial fit analysis showing whether each choice was a safe or risky financial decision

• Over/under budget indicators based on the family’s stated budget

• 5-year loan repayment outlook, calculated using average starting salaries in your location

• Overall fit score, pulling from Niche’s extensive college rankings and student data

• Living cost estimates that factor in off-campus housing options after freshman year — something Niche can uniquely calculate because of its expanding database on neighborhoods, K–12 schools, and local housing

The beauty of this tool is in the efficiency. Instead of opening ten separate browser tabs and entering the same data into every school’s website, families can now compare all their colleges side-by-side in one place. What used to take an hour can now be done in minutes.

How accurate is it?:

When it comes to accuracy, the results were mixed.

In our test, 2 out of 10 schools showed cost estimates that were about $30,000 higher per year on the university’s calculator than on Niche. For the other 8 schools, Niche’s estimates were typically $5,000–$15,000 lower per year than what the university calculators reported.

While this variation is significant, it also highlights just how inconsistent universities’ own cost calculators can be. For families, having one centralized tool that makes these comparisons easier—even if not perfect—is a big step forward.
